Student attendance for the 2022-2023 school year has wrapped up in most districts throughout Illinois. For some districts, summer school is in full swing. Every year, May and June bring a bustle of activity to end both the school year and the fiscal year. For many administrators and school boards, June will focus on contracts for the coming year and closing out the 2022-2023 fiscal year. June is also a great opportunity to participate in various administrator academies and continuing education programs.

Through Illinois ASBO, Brian R. Bare and Brittany Flaherty Theis presented a full-day administrator academy in Bloomington entitled “Legal Standards for the Management of School Personnel.” The presentation covered general legal concepts in personnel management, wages, benefits, and teacher tenure, as well as detailed sections on filling vacancies, RIFs, honorable dismissals, and dismissal for cause, as well as alternatives to discharge, collective bargaining, and discrimination.

Mr. Bare and Ms. Theis have presented portions of this administrator academy in the past. This time, however, they were joined by Dr. Jeff Utsinger who provided valuable insights as an administrator. The administrator academy was hosted by Bloomington Public School District No. 87.
